The advantages of magnetic cubes

Magnets in a speed cube offer the following advantages:
  • fewer lock-ups
  • less overshooting
  • increased stability during solving
  • improved rotation feel
Opinions differ on the question of whether or not magnetic speed cubes are better than the ones without magnets. It is best if you try them and see the advantages for yourself.

How long have magnetic speed cubes been around?

In 2016 a trend emerged among speedcubers who would modify 3x3 cubes with magnets, and the American Chris Tran is seen as its pioneer. These speed cube modifications were rather elaborate because they required the necessary materials and knowhow. Then, in 2017, GAN introduced the GAN356 Air UM, the first mass-produced magnetic speed cube. Other well-known brands followed suit shortly thereafter.

Are magnetic cubes allowed in WCA competitions?
