Inventor of the Pyraminx

You've never heard of Uwe Mèffert? Then it is about time, because this German puzzle designer is not only responsible for inventing the Pyraminx but also has other twisty puzzles such as Megaminx and Skewb to his name. Mèffert invented the Pyraminx in the early 1970s; before the classic 3x3 cube even existed. However, it was only put on the market in 1981 once Mèffert realised what a resounding success the 3x3 cube had become.

Solving the Pyraminx

Many websites claim that the Pyraminx is easier to solve than a 3x3 speed cube. Whether that is truly the case for beginners remains to be seen. In any case, there are numerous tutorials available online that show how to solve the Pyraminx cube in the simplest way possible. Pyraminx in the WCA

Since 2003, the Pyraminx has its own category in competitions held by the WCA (World Cube Association). Each participant has five tries to solve the Pyraminx. For scoring the “Average of 5“ event, the best and worst times are disregarded and an average is calculated from the remaining three tries. The world record here stands at 1.66 seconds, set by Jasper Murray in 2022.
There are also combined rounds, where the first events are “Best of 2“ or “Best of X“ (X can be 1, 2 or 3), followed by “Average of 5“.
The world record in the Single Solve event was set by Dominik Górny in 2018 and currently stands at 0.91 seconds.
