Inventor of the 4x4 speed cube

Just like the 3x3 cube, the 4x4 speed cube was also invented by a Hungarian, namely the mathematician Péter Sebestény in 1981. Sebestény filed a patent for his invention and sold the usage rights.

Structure of the 4x4 speed cube

The 4x4 cube has a total of 56 rotating pieces. They consist of:
  • 24 single-coloured middle pieces (4 pieces per colour) which in contrast to the 3x3 speed cube have no fixed position. Per colour, the middle pieces can be positioned independently from each other.
  • 24 two-coloured edge pieces (2 pieces per colour combination).
  • 8 three-coloured corner pieces (1 piece per colour combination).
This results in a possible 7 quattuordecillion (that’s a 7 with 45 zeroes!) different combinations for the 4x4 speed cube.

The current world record

The Single Solve record is currently held by the American Max Park with 16.79 seconds. The record for the 4x4 cube Average Solve is 19.88 seconds and was also set by Max Park. Both records were set in 2022.
