A careful examination of the 7x7 cube

The 7x7 speed cube has a total of 218 pieces, which are also called cubies. Of those
  • 150 are single-colour middle pieces. The six middle pieces in the centre are fixed just like they are on a 3x3 cube, so their positioning towards each other does not change. The remaining 144 middle pieces move freely.
  • 60 are two-coloured edge pieces.
  • 8 are three-coloured corner pieces.
Because the cube consists of so many individual pieces, it has 1.95 x 10160 possible combinations.

Inventor

The first 7x7 cube was invented by Panagiotis Verdes and patented under the name V-Cube 7. Since then, this type of speed cube has been manufactured in a similar style by many other companies. The main difference between these 7x7 cubes is that the V-cube is rounded whereas the others mainly have straight edges.

The 7x7x7 speedcubing world record

The 7x7x7 cube has been an official speedcubing competition category since 2009. The records for this cube are currently held by Max Park. In the Single Solve event, it stands at 1 minute and 40.89 seconds, set in 2019. In the Average Solve event for the 7x7 cube, he set a record in 2020 with 1 minute and 46.57 seconds.
