Where does the name Square-1 come from?

The Square-1 is also called ‘Back to Square One’, which is another way of saying "back to the beginning". When this cube was invented in 1990, cubers were only able to purchase this 3x3 cube in a twisted configuration. The goal was to revert the structure back to a cube shape – back to the beginning.

Special features of the Square-1

Since not all cube pieces are of equal size and have different shapes, certain moves are impossible with this 3x3 speed cube. This means that the known algorithms have to be adapted again and again to the position of the rotation axes of the cube. During the solving process, it is also possible that the differently shaped cube pieces are distributed unevenly over the levels. These features make it difficult to solve the Square-1 shape mod.

Official world record

At a competition held by the WCA (World Cube Association) in 2022, the American Sameer Aggarwal managed to solve the Square-1 cube in 4.37 seconds – a new world record!
